<P>A new neighbor is coming to the Willard District. I am not sure if we can
bake an apple pie big enough to properly welcome them to the neighborhood, but
at least I can say Welcome!! Willard School District has been home to the
Springfield Airport since it was originally constructed. The old terminal has
been added to many times to support the growing need for air travel. Now the new
Springfield / Branson terminal will open on May 6th. I am flying to see my
daughter's college graduation in Arizona on May 14th, so my family will get to
see the facility from the air. Over the years I have had several questions in
regard to the airport and how it provides funding for the school district. The
school does get funding due to the airport, but due to the fact that it is a
governmental entity we do not get the same rate of funding that we would from a
commercial business. The district does benefit from personal property taxes that
are assessed to actual planes that are stationed at the airport which is a good
revenue support to our district. The indirect impact is clearly in the
businesses that choose to relocate to be closer to the airport. Clearly the new
Fed Ex depot is being constructed on EE Hwy. partly to be close to the airport.
The enterprise zone which surrounds the airport offers tax incentives over 10
years to businesses which build in that area. These businesses are a significant
revenue stream for our schools. We have been notified that everyone is invited
to the open house at the airport tomorrow (Sat.) from 1:00 to 5:00. The new
entry is in operation from Chestnut Expressway, as well as the round-about on EE
Hwy. I have been told that the terminal is beautiful. I look forward to getting
a closer look at our new neighbor. </P>
<p>I'd like to give a big "shout out" to all the district secretaries on behalf of Administrative Professional Day! Basically we'd have to shut down the district without you. Thanks for everything you do for us and for Willard kids. </p>
<p>Have a great weekend! </p>

<P>Greetings from the Willard Middle School. We are all exhaling this morning,
as we have completed the MAP testing for this year, and although there is more
to do before the end of the year, we are glad to have this phase completed. The
last two weeks have included special test-prep lessons, activities, and rewards,
all in an effort to promote the best efforts of our kids. We feel the process
was successful, and look forward to seeing the results next fall. An example of
what our Willard kids can do occurred this week. Our Middle School Academic team
traveled to Clever to take part in an Academic competition with several other
schools. They had a great time, and competed well, and the sponsoring teachers,
Mrs. Damron and Mrs. Barnicle, both commented on how much they enjoyed the day
with kids who seemed excited about answering questions and showing off what they
have learned. The best thing took place the next day however, when the principal
from Clever called my office to let me know how great our kids had done, and how
impressed he was with their attitudes, behavior, and sportsmanship. How great is
that! We sometimes get bogged down with the negatives in life, but it is sure
uplifting when someone calls out of the blue to brag on your kids. Keep up the
good work, and lets finish this year up with a bang. Tom Merriott WMS Asst.
Principal </P>

community exceptionally well. Thursday evening, the Kindergarten students showed
off their musical talents with their concert. It was an enjoyable evening for
performers and family members alike. </P>

<P>Wow what a day!!!! Sherri, my secretary, has been reminding me all day long
that I need to write my Pride article. Unfortunately, I have literally ran from
meeting to meeting and tried to solve several issues on my cell phone while on
the run. Over the last few weeks I have seen my pace matched by teachers that
are in total focus hoping to utilize every ounce of instructional time in order
for kids to be successful on the MAP test. As we all pause for the weekend I
simply want to say "Thank You" for your commitment to Willard kids and the work
efforts that I have witnessed the last few weeks. I am one parent that
appreciates your talent in growing young people. I have no doubt that the
outcome of our efforts will exceed our expectations in many areas. </P>

<P>It's hard to believe but we only have four more weeks until district
tournaments begin for Spring sports and the Tigers are gearing up for a playoff
run. </P>
<p>The baseball Tigers are hot! After defeating Nixa last night 6-1, they ran their record to an impressive 10-4 for the season. The tigers gave sophomore pitcher Lucas Peterson all the run support he needed as he dominated on the mound. Weather permitting they will play at Parkview on Saturday at 1:00 and then resume COC play next week as they travel to Neosho on Tuesday and to Republic on Thursday. </p>
<p>The soccer tigers will look to get back in the win column as they will play at Pleasant Hope tonight in a make-up game from earlier in the spring. They will then play in the Neosho Tournament on Saturday. This was not on the original schedule but was added due to the number of games they have lost because of rain. Next week the girls will be busy as they play at Catholic on Monday and are at Ozark on Tuesday. Both games start at 4:30. </p>
<p>Congratulations to the following boys track athletes that earned a medal at Aurora on Tuesday. The team placed 4th of 7 schools. 1st place - Sawyer Vincent, pole vault 4 x 1 relay, Andy Gomes, Rex Clark, Jimmy Johnson, Alex Christensen 2nd place - Andy Gomes, 100m dash and 200m dash Brian Daehling, shot put Sam Murray, pole vault 4 x 2 relay, Gomes, Clark, Johnson, Christensen 3rd place - Christensen, 100m dash Skyler Frazier, shot put </p>
<p>Also, congratulations to Kacy Hession on winning the mile and 2-mile race at Aurora. At this time I don't have any other results from the girls side but they had several outstanding efforts! Willard will be hosting the Willard Relays next Thursday with field events starting at 4:00. </p>
<p>I would like to formally welcome our new basketball coach into the Willard family. His name is Brad Crighton and he comes to us from Stoney Creek High School in Rochester, Michigan where he compiled a 94-51 record as the head girls coach and a 82-18 record as the boy's jv coach. Coach Crighton will be teaching math at the high school and will also be taking on the golf program as well. </p>

<P>Special Services would like to recognize MS nurse, Kendra Craft, for her
professionalism displayed last week in an emergency situation with a student who
has special needs and who was experiencing significant seizures. Kendra's
decisive action, calm demeanor, and thoroughness with her responsibilities
ensured student safety and left emergency responders, MS staff and myself
knowing our students are well cared for in the school setting. Two emergency
staff complimented Kendra's skills, excellent location and labeling of nurse'
station and how well other staff members reacted to the emergency. Truly, it was
a wonderful job by Kendra and others. Kendra is ready to celebrate her 11th
anniversary in the district and has become a vital part of the MS team staff.
Thank you, Kendra, for all you do for our students! </P>
<p>A Sporting Chance will be held this Saturday at Kickapoo's JFK Stadium. Several of our students with special needs will be competing with peers from districts in the area. This event begins at 9:00 and all are welcomed to come cheer for our athletes! Sandy Gold, Director of Special Services </p>

week on Tuesday, May 5th and Thursday May 7th. This is an important time for the
high school and we ask parents to encourage students to prepare for a successful
testing experience by getting proper rest and a good breakfast. Thank you in

<P>This week at the Middle School, we are really concentrating on one main
thing: MAP Testing. We have other activities going on as well, but the key has
been preparing and doing well on the MAP tests, and from all indications, things
are going great. A huge factor in having success on the MAP is to have the kids
come to school, and focus on their work, and put forth a good effort. The
students have responded with flying colors, with an attendance rate of around
99% for the week! We want to say thanks to all who helped to get the kids here
on time, and making sure they got to bed on time, had a good breakfast, and all
the other factors that go into being successful this week. We look forward to
seeing the results, and believe that our efforts will be reflected in those
scores next fall. We complete the testing next week, and then our focus shifts
to finishing the year on a positive note, sending one group on to the high
school, and preparing for a new one from the intermediate school. The circle of
life. Thanks for checking on us, and have a great weekend. Tom Merriott WMS
Asst. Principal </P>

<P>The MAP is over! The MAP is over! These words echoed through the halls of WIS
on Thursday as students (and teachers) are glad to have our state assessments
behind us. We want to thank our wonderful counselors Mrs. Skaggs and Mrs.
Johnson for coordinating our testing, our PTO for providing snacks on test days,
and our MAP assembly committee for putting together an awesome assembly for
everyone on Monday. Today was a great day to get outside and enjoy the weather
after the week of testing. </P>
<p>Next week our honor choir will be singing at the Springfield Cardinals game. This will coincide with our WIS day at the ballpark. Game time is 2 pm. We look forward to a good time and hope for some great baseball weather. Tom Davis, Principal </p>

<P>It has been a busy week at Willard Central. The 3rd and 4th grade students
showed they were WILD about learning through their hard work on the MAP test. It
was great to hear students getting excited about knowing that stuff. Our
students felt successful and showed great effort on the test. Many students even
commented that the MAP was really cool and that they could not wait to see how
well they did. Teachers and students alike deserve a pat on the back for a great
week. </P>
<p>Our Kindergarten students also had a busy week visiting the Dickerson Park Zoo on Tuesday. They had a wonderful experience and represented Willard very well. Our 2nd grade students visited the Nature Center on Friday to learn about animals and habitats. They also had a great time of learning and fun. </p>
<p>We are looking forward to our Kindergarten Concert on Thursday evening, April 23rd at 7:00 and our Fine Arts Night on April 28th from 5:30-7:30. </p>
<p>On behalf of the teachers and administration of the Willard School District, I would like to thank and congratulate Mrs. Cindy Miles, WC kindergarten teacher, for completing her service as the Missouri State Teachers Association/Community Teachers Association President. Mrs. Miles has faithfully served Willard teachers as president for the past 4 years. Her efforts, dedication, and professionalism are greatly appreciated. </p>

<P>"Kissing the MAP test goodbye!" Today the students received a Hershey's kiss
with the previous comment on it. As I wandered the halls during testing periods
this week I was very proud of our students and how hard they worked. All we can
do is hope that the instruction provided for the past 4 or 5 years sticks for
this one week of intense testing. It is hard to believe that this one week "snap
shot" of learning has so much influence on our schools. Imagine all the things
that happen in a regular week in an elementary and then add state testing....
</P>
<p>Reflections from the MAP battleground: * Geese on the playground right outside the classes who are testing. Never had geese on the playground before but they must have heard we were state testing and came to check it out. * Ants - It's that time of the year for ants. They also heard we were testing and came in for a peek. * Smoking laminator - Someone accidentally turned the laminator to the highest heat level and it started smoking. I guess state testing week is too much for school equipment as well. * Nose blowing - Not sure if it is because they had kleenex readily available but there was a lot of nose-blowing in the testing classrooms. * Lost keys - These poor teachers have so much on their plate this week they can't even keep track of their car keys :) Oh.... the trials and tribulations of state testing will soon be behind us and we will start all over again. One nice thing is that we get to do it all over again in a year and hope to do better. (Even if we are doing very well.) </p>

<P>It has been MAP Attack Week! Our 3rd and 4th grade students have been testing
for MAP this week. They have been very excited to "Show Off" what they know, and
we are very proud of all their efforts! </P>
<p>It has turned into a beautiful week for fieldtrips. 2nd grade took a fieldtrip to Frontier Theater this Thursday. They loved the slide and the zip line! The hands-on experience put them back in time to pioneer days. They loved it! 1st grade took also took a fieldtrip this week to Rutledge Farm. It was great way to wrap up their life cycle unit in science, and first hand how plants develop and grow. </p>

<P>The votes are in! The newly elected Willard Board of Education includes: </P>
<UL>
<LI>Mike Graves serving a second consecutive three year term </LI>
<LI>Dr. John Lilly serving a three year term </LI>
<LI>Jennifer Fickbohm serving a two year term </LI>
<LI>Kip Baker serving a one year term </LI></UL>
<P>I believe that each of the new members are eager to serve the children of the
Willard District and come to the table with no agenda issues other than service
to our district. I have learned over the past 5 years as Superintendent of
Willard Schools that every Board of Education has a little different
personality. However, there have always been common threads of purpose existing
each year. These would include: </P>
<UL>
<LI>Always make decisions with the thought of what is best for
kids.&nbsp;</LI>
<LI>Our children deserve the best teachers and staff available. This requires
that teachers and staff are supported and appreciated.&nbsp;</LI>
<LI>We are all held accountable to the Willard community to be effective and
  efficient in our efforts. </LI>
<LI>We must pursue excellence every day. Continual improvement is the
  standard. </LI></UL>
<P>I look forward to working with this new BOE. 2009-2010 will be a year that is
remembered for a long time due to the status in the economy. District leadership
will meet this challenge head on. Wisdom, common sense, and communication will
be utilized to establish success. </P>
<p>Please join me in welcoming our newly elected Board Members to the Willard team and thank outgoing members Marsha Anstine, Joel Adams and Jana Copeland for their dedication to Willard kids. </p>

<P>Special Services would like to recognize the paraprofessionals and aides
working within our district and who consistently work to help students and
staff. We appreciate the many positive ways they impact our school by performing
an endless list of duties. Thank you to those paras and aides who put students
first each day. </P>
<p>We would also like to recognize and thank Erica Poulson and all other high school special services staff for hosting the Transition Fair this past Tuesday evening. Eighteen outside agencies were on-site to educate students, parents and teachers of resources and assistance for life after high school for students with disabilities. We were glad to have teachers from Logan-Rogersville as our guests and have them share information with their teachers and parents. Our teachers did a very nice job providing a meal and dessert to the vendors and making parents feel welcomed. </p>

<P>We had a very unique week as students were driving a car within the Commons
area. TADA ( Tigers Against Drugs and Alcohol ) sponsored an impaired driving
simulator. The simulator program is designed to demonstrate the effects of mood
altering chemicals on decision making and driving skills. A full size car was
placed in the commons and equipped with a host of computer attachments to input
responses from the accelerator, steering, and braking. Students, teachers, and
administrators took their turn "behind the wheel" to drive. Each driver was
fitted with 3d virtual reality goggles to simulate landscape, events, and
motion. Students gathered in large groups to watch their peers strike other
cars, pedestrians, and other objects. The simulator modified the car's responses
based on a pre-set intoxication level of the driver (programmed in by the
computer). Teachers, Administrators, and students laughed initially, but reality
set in as it was very evident that driving under the influence resulted in
serious repercussions We thank TADA for the simulator and their Pre-Prom efforts
to help students in making good choices for themselves and others. Stewart
Pratt, Principal </P>

<P>Greetings from Willard Middle School. As we struggle to decide whether to
turn on the heat or the air conditioner, at least the calendar says it is
spring, and the Cardinals are on TV at night, so things really are pretty good
around here. We have a fun event coming next week, as we celebrate National
Library Week, and encourage kids to "Read Like a Rock Star." This will be a week
long event, and there will be trivia contests and prizes all week, as we try to
show that reading can actually be a fun thing to do, and maybe even "cool." </P>
<p>The main focus next week will be the MAP test, which will begin on Wednesday, the 15th of April. One of the biggest factors for success on the MAP test is the effort and attitudes of the students when they are taking that test. I truly believe our students can do fantastic on these tests, but only if they want to do so. Our goal will be to motivate them as well as prepare them, and we ask that our parents assist us in this goal whenever possible. I am a competitive person, and if there is going to be a list that ranks anything, I want to be at the top. Our kids, teachers, and community do a great job, and this is one way we can be recognized for this. We wish all of our students good luck while taking this test, and look forward to seeing the results. Enjoy the three day Easter break, but remember that we are back in session on Monday, and we have much work to do. </p>
<p>Finally, we had some exciting news this weekend in our art department. Southwest District Art Teachers Association held their annual art show and workshop day on Saturday, April 4 at Drury School of Architecture. The Willard Middle School Exploratory Art Class (for Special Needs students) came away with BEST OF SHOW for grades 7 - 9. They created a large group project which was entered in the category of Fibers. Along with this prestigious award, the other five artworks also received recognition. </p>
<p>Victoria Steinmark- Second place- Fibers Kevin Bledsoe- First Place, Printmaking Allie Hood- First Place, Jewelry Sarah Kramer- Honorable Mention- Ceramics Gorgia Mitchell- Honorable Mitchell-Water-based painting Mrs. Treadway is so proud of the accomplishments of these students, as are we all. </p>
<p>Thanks for checking on us. Tom Merriott WMS Asst. Principal </p>

<P>What a busy 4 day week at WIS! Our students and teachers have been busy
making a final push to make sure we are ready for MAP testing next week. WIS is
confident that our students have the knowledge and preparation to continue the
tradition of excellence we have established in past years. A reminder that test
dates are Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (4/14 and 4/15) for both grades and
Thursday (4/16) for 5th grade. Please make sure your student is prepared by
getting plenty of rest and eating a healthy breakfast on those days. </P>
<p>Today our students and teachers had the privilege of hearing a great motivational speaker to help get everyone pumped up for next week. Willard graduate and professional boxer B.J. Flores spent some time with us this afternoon. Through his hard work and dedication he has become one of the best boxers in the world. We know his words of wisdom and life experiences will not only get our students in the right mind-set for MAP testing but also as they continue their journey toward adulthood. </p>
<p>A reminder for everyone to continue to "Pay it Forward"! Tom Davis, Principal </p>

<P>WC is gearing up for the MAP next week. Students and teachers have been
working hard to finish preparing for the test and we are confident that all of
their hard work will pay off. A special thanks to Mrs. Debbie Gromer, WC
Counselor, for all of her hard work in preparing the test materials, snacks,
student encouragement bags and treats!! Her efforts are greatly appreciated and
will help our MAP testing run smoothly. If you get a chance, you may also want
to visit the Willard Central blog to see all of the excitement from our Test
Success Assembly. (That is if our teachers are brave enough to share pictures of
it!) From the Crocodile Hunter to Alvin and the Chipmunks, we showed that WC is

<p>Our short week is quickly coming to a close. Spring is a great time to focus on life cycles, and that is exactly what our classrooms have been doing. Kindergarten and 1st grades are learning about lifecycles first hand. Kindergarten is documenting and recording the process that their caterpillars go through in order to turn into butterflies. 1st grade is learning what plants need to grow and growing lima beans in their classrooms. </p>
<p>We are gearing up for a school-wide MAP assembly on Monday. We encourage all our 3rd and 4th graders to do their BEST on the MAP: </p>
<p>Be here Eat healthy Sleep Plenty Try Hard </p>
<p>We are proud of our students hard work this year and know that will do their BEST on the MAP. </p>

<P>We had a special visitor at our building on Wednesday. Louie, the Springfield
Cardinal mascot, came to cheer on our third and fourth grade students for MAP
testing next week. We also discussed test taking tips such as getting plenty of
rest, eating a good breakfast and arriving to school on time. These students
will be taking the test April 14-17 beginning at 9:00am each morning. As a MAP
reward, the third and fourth graders will also be attending a Springfield

<p>Way to Advertise Through the Willard Parks and Recreation: The Willard Parks and Recreation department has new staff, new ideas, and new activities in 2009. </p>
<p>Our top priority this year is offering free or low cost family friendly activities and adding more sports programs for youth and adults. Our department has seen a huge rise in the number of participants. For one session of basketball, we averaged over 1,500 people attending per week and last month we had approximately 400 people attend our Valentine Dance. Those are just a few examples of our attendance numbers. This year our 4th of July celebration will be bigger than ever and in May we will start a full season of the hugely popular Movie in the Park. </p>
<p>I want to invite you to take advantage of our successes and advertise with the Willard Parks Department. </p>
<p>4 X 8 Sign at the Recreation Center: Did you know that you can purchase a 4 X 8 advertising sign at the Recreation Center? The sign is a 4 X 8 aluminum sign that gets hung in the gym during basketball season and on the baseball field during baseball. With all these new activities, now is the perfect time to advertise with us! The cost is $400 (which includes the making of the sign) for the first year and $240 for every year after. Contracts are for a one year period. This is a great way to advertise your business in front on thousands of people in the community. These signs are visible for everyone who enters the gym and the ball fields. Your sign will be repaired by the Parks Department if any damage occurs. If you would like to purchase a sign please call Kevin at (417)742-2262 </p>
<p>Advertising in our fall 2009 Program Guide: Willard Parks and Recreation sends out a spring and fall program guide to inform the community about all of our activities, sports programs and events. 4000 copies of this guide are printed. 3500 are mailed out to the Willard area community and 500 are for people to pick up at City Hall and the Recreation Center. These guides are used for the entire spring or fall season. A full page ad is only $200 and a half page ad is $125. There are limited spaces, so please call Kevin McDonald at (417)742-2262 today. </p></BODY></HTML>

<P>Tuesday, April 7th, we will all be given an awesome opportunity and
responsibility; the privilege of voting. The U.S. constitution delegates the
authority over public education to the individual states. The State of Missouri
has supported the stance of local control of education for decades. This stance
establishes local school districts which are to be governed with the oversight
of elected community officials. These elected officials assume delegated duties,
power, and authority from the state of Missouri. All states have differing rules
and statutes. Some states elect the Superintendent along with the members of the
Board of Education. Some states believe in county schools with one Board and
Superintendent serving over several communities. The State of Hawaii is one
giant school district. Some states allow for the mayor of the city in which the
school district exists to have authority over the school. Once again I am glad
to live in Southwest Missouri. The system that is utilized in Missouri is in my
opinion a very common sense approach to the governing of public education.
However, the whole system breaks down if patrons do not exercise their right to
vote. I attended the "Meet the Candidate" forum for potential school board
members last night at Central Elementary. I would like to thank Cindy Miles,
Tiffany Houghtaling and MSTA for hosting the event. All potential board members
present were passionate and articulate in their comments. A general pride and
appreciation for our district was communicated by all. The candidates for school
board are listed below. </P>
<P>Candidates for 3 Year Term: </P>

  <LI>John Lilly </LI>

<P>Well, we are back from Spring Break and, as usual, Mother Nature can't seem
to make up her mind on what kind of weather to give to the Ozarks. 70 degrees
one day and then 45 and rainy the next! Oh well, time to focus on the things
that are warm. </P>
<p>Baseball is off to a hot start after defeating Aurora, Joplin (first time in over 30 years!), and Waynesville for a 3-1 start to the season. The tigers will continue in the Willard Lead-Off Tournament tonight as they take on Ash Grove at 4:30. That game will be followed by Mansfield vs. Strafford at 7:00. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with games starting at 9:00am. The championship game is scheduled for 7:30pm. Good luck Tigers! </p>
<p>The lady tiger soccer team is battling the elements to get some games in. They will play in the Christian County Soccer Tournament this weekend before hosting Bolivar on Monday starting at 4:30. They will then host COC opponent Neosho on Tuesday before traveling to Greenwood on Thursday. Both games will start at 4:30. While we are on soccer. Progress continues on the soccer press box/storage building. Thanks to the efforts of the maintenance department and the students in the building trades classes, the project should be completed very soon. </p>
<p>Track had their first meet rained out yesterday in Branson. They will try it again today with events starting at 4:00. They will then travel to the Aurora Relays next Thursday. </p>
<p>The WHS Chamber Choir competed at the Chicago Choral Festival during Spring Break. They competed against choirs from New York, Canada, California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Missouri. Let's see....how do you think they did? THEY DID AWESOME! WHS Chamber earned a total of 14 awards including: Top Choral Group, First Place Chamber Choir, First Place Women's Choir, First Place Men's Choir, Sweepstakes, Maestro Award - to Tim Huskisson, Gold Award for Chamber Choir and Women's Choir and Men's Choir, and many more! </p>
<p>I would like to issue two special thank you's. First to Chris Church, Vicki Meraz, John Paul Chapman, and the many volunteers that made last Saturday's Mid Continent Color Guard Championships at Willard so successful. There were over 75 groups from Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas that competed and Willard hosted with class! The second thank you goes to Luciana Brown, Bob Andrus, and Season James for working so diligently with the new middle school softball program. Willard is one of 5 schools in southwest Missouri to have such a program and the girls played their first game ever last Tuesday. They played hard , they played together, and they did it with class!....sound familiar? </p>

<P>Willard High School Special Services is hosting its annual Transition Fair on
April 7, 2009, 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the high school commons. This event is a
gathering of representatives from community agencies who offer services and
information to students with disabilities and their families as they make the
transition from high school to adult life. Approximately 15 agencies will be
present, providing information on such topics as postsecondary education,
vocational assessment and training, financial services, independent living, and
housing. Among the agencies that will be represented are: The ARC of the Ozarks,
Missouri Career Center, Vocational Rehabilitation, AO Employment, Springfield
Housing Authority, Springfield Workshop Inc., and Ozarks Technical College. The
Transition Fair is an opportunity for students and families to meet with a
variety of agencies in one location, to have questions answered, and to learn
what resources are available in Willard, Springfield, and the surrounding area
that help graduates prepare for adult living. Particular thanks go to high
school special services teacher Erica Poulson for heading up this effort. Kelli
Akers, Process Coordinator </P>

<P>Wow&amp; What happened? Did we really have a spring break? That was fast!
Several of the comments that echoed in the commons on Monday morning as we came
back to school. Many students spoke of travels, sleeping in, chores, and earning
a little more money at work. We hope everyone rejuvenated their "batteries", as
we charge into the last 30+ days. </P>
<p>A quick reminder that End Of Course Exams testing will be April 28th, April 30th, May 5th, and May 7th. Please check calendars as WHS begins State Testing of our students. It is imperative that students be in attendance and rested, to reach their highest potential on the tests. </p>
<p>The Willard High School Science Department wishes to reconnect with our graduates who are working in science-related professions. We want our current students to have a greater appreciation for the opportunities they have in science by seeing the number, diversity and achievements of professionals who were once, like them, WHS science students. We hope that in the near future we can establish a WHS Science Hall of Fame to honor the accomplishments of our most outstanding graduates. </p>
<p>We would appreciate your sending us the names and contact information of any WHS graduates you know who are currently working in a science-related field or profession. Please send information to Lynn Crandall at &lt;mailto:lcrandal@willard.k12.mo.us&gt;lcrandal@willard.k12.mo.u s </p>
<p>Lastly, senior parents please check the WHS website for a link to Graduation information. The PowerPoint presentation was given to the Senior Class in early March and provides valuable information surrounding Graduation on May 15th and the close of school for the Senior Class of 2009. Senior parents are urged strongly to examine the ppt link. Stewart Pratt, Principal </p>

<P>Greetings from Willard Middle School. We have rolled the calendar over to
April, and with that comes the always exciting MAP testing time. We will be
preparing over the next couple of weeks, and the actual testing begins on April
15th, (also tax day!) and we will be doing all that we can to motivate our
students to show what they can do. The room next to my office is full of snacks,
"smart" water, and other goodies. Many hours go into making this a successful
venture, and we appreciate the hard work that the kids, the teachers, and
parents put into this. Any positive word that you as a parent can add to
encourage your son/daughter will be greatly valued, and we thank you in advance.
</P>
<p>Along with the anticipation of MAP time, we have many other activities going on as usual. This week marked the first ever middle school girls softball game, and it was a fantastic night. We had two games against a visiting Branson Lady Pirates team, and we split the contests, losing 1-3, and winning 19-4. There was a great crowd, the girls played well, and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves , although it was a bit cool as the evening progressed. Several girls who have never participated in school sports were able to be a part of something pretty special, and it was great to see their faces as they went through the experience. The track team took the bus ride to Rogersville this week, and will host their first home meet this afternoon (Friday) here at Willard. Cheerleading tryouts will be next week on the 8th, and the 8th grade dance is coming up on the 30th, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Finally, a reminder that we will not have school on Good Friday, next week, but we will be in session on Monday the 13th, to make up our last snow day. Have a great weekend, and thanks for checking on us. Tom Merriott WMS Asst. Principal </p>

<P>As an elementary principal, I often attend evening school events. However, on
Tuesday evening, I had the privilege of bringing my children to the Parents As
Teachers Kindergarten Readiness Night at Willard Central. It was great to see
parents engaging with their children and practicing skills for Kindergarten
Screening. It was fun to be dad for a change and enjoy playing rhyming games,
catch, counting, patterning and many other learning activities with my own
children. Our Parents As Teachers educators do a fantastic job and on behalf of
all of the other parents and students in attendance, I want to thank and
congratulate them on a wonderful evening. Early childhood education is critical
for students future success in school and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

<P>I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break despite the weather. It seems as
though our days have been more like winter than spring! I am sure all of that
will change soon as we approach April and May. This week students and teachers
have been getting back into our school routine. Our third and fourth grade
students are preparing for our upcoming MAP test April 14-17. They have been
working hard and I am confident they will do their best. Our fourth grade
teachers have been offering MAPAttack after school on Thursdays for students. It
is a fun academic incentive for students to study and prepare for MAP. On
Tuesday, our third grade teachers had a MAP Parent Night for all families. This
was a great opportunity to showcase student work, display MAP released items and
answer any questions. I would like to thank all of my third and fourth grade
teachers for their hard work in preparing students! Have a great weekend. Kara

<p>Way to Advertise Through the Willard Parks and Recreation: The Willard Parks and Recreation department has new staff, new ideas, and new activities in 2009. Our top priority this year is offering free or low cost family friendly activities and adding more sports programs for youth and adults. I want to invite you to take advantage of our successes and advertise with the Willard Parks Department. 4 X 8 Sign at the Recreation Center: Did you know that you can purchase a 4 X 8 advertising sign at the Recreation Center? The sign is a 4 X 8 aluminum sign that gets hung in the gym during basketball season and on the baseball field during baseball. With all these new activities, now is the perfect time to advertise with us! The cost is $400 (which includes the making of the sign) for the first year and $240 for every year after. Contracts are for a one year period. This is a great way to advertise your business in front on thousands of people in the community. These signs are visible for everyone who enters the gym and the ball fields. Your sign will be repaired by the Parks Department if any damage occurs. If you would like to purchase a sign please call Kevin at (417)742-2262 Advertising in our fall 2009 Program Guide: Willard Parks and Recreation sends out a spring and fall program guide to inform the community about all of our activities, sports programs and events. </p>
