Since December we've been working on following directions. Being able to read, listen, and follow multi-step directions is a Communication Arts goal. In December we practiced following directions by making two kinds of paper snowflakes and various origami. The students even tried write directions for their favorite oragami piece!

Earlier this week we worked with following directions with word problems. Now today comes the fun! Following directions in science! It's slime time! Beware of the gooey concoctions your kids will be bring home! 

The slime created today is not edible, so please help them keep it away from small children and animals.

Thank you to all of the families who were able to attend our holiday dinner. I had a wonderful time visiting with you and appreciate all of your help with making it a success and with cleaning up. : )

It's that time of year again. Time for scary stories, popcorn, and reading by a flashlight! For the last week, the reading students have been selecting, interpreting, and practicing how to read scary stories with expression. The students are using their voices to express the emotion of the characters as well as to distinguish among them. They are also using volume and rate to convey the tone of the story. Appropriateness is also important in reading stories; students have the opportunity to select sound effects and background noises using apps on the classroom iPad, but they have to fit the story to be effective!

This year's selections come from the following collection of scary stories: More Bones: Scary Stories from Around the World retold by Arielle North Olson, Tales for the Midnight Hour by J.B. Stamper, Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones retold by Alvin Schwartz, and They're Coming for You: Scary Stories that Scream to be Read by O. Penn-Coughin on the Nooks.

On October 27 and 31 the lights will go off and the glow stars, flashlights, and student talent will shine!
